Choose the right Baby Formula
Baby formula is a liquid or powder made for babies. All formulas sold must meet the nutritional requirements of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This means that the major brands like Enfamil, Similac and store brands like Kroeger and Walmart should meet the minimum requirements and should be safe for your baby.
There are differences on how these formulas are made. Some babies may react differently to some of them. It is best to follow the doctor's recommendation.
There are many different brands available. The most popular brands are Enfamil, Similac and Good Start.
Infant formulas are available in different forms:
- Ready to use is very convenient, but it is also the most expensive kind.
- Concentrated liquid is mixed with water according to the instructions on the package.
- Powder is the least expensive form. Usually one level scoop of powder is mixed with
2 ounces of water.
There are various kinds of formulas available. Some are iron fortified and
some are made from soy milk. If your baby is allergic to formula made from cow's milk, your
doctor may recommend one made from soy milk.
It is important to follow safety procedures. Always measure accurately and use clean bottles. Refrigerate the formula until you are ready to use it.
