with a Baby Security Gate

A sturdy baby security gate will keep a child enclosed in an area. It will also keep the child away from pets and prevent the child from climbing up the stairs. A gate should be used until the child is about 2 years old.



There are basically two types available:

1. A pressure mounted gate usually has two sliding panels that can be adjusted to makethe gate fit the opening. This type does the job when used to separate two areas on the same floor level. It also works well at the bottom of a stairway. It prevents a child from crawling up the stairs. A pressure gate is easy to install, but it is also easy to pull apart.

2. A hardware mounted gate or permanent gate requires screws for installation. It is more secure and better if used at the top of the stairs. Keep large toys away, because they can be used as a stepping stool for climbing over the gate.

When looking for gates, consider these features:
1. Material should be sturdy and smooth. Surface of the panels should not have any splinters.
2. Height should be 26-30 inches.
3. Gates should expand from 28-48 inches. Some will extend to 60 inches. Extensions are available for some models.
4. For the top of the stairs, use only hardware mounted gates for safety reasons.
