Baby Sunburn
Protection Guidelines

The baby's skin is delicate and very sensitive. Therefore, it is important to use safe baby sunburn protection guidelines.

Babies should not be in the sun too long, even if they are protected with sunscreen lotion. It might only take 10 minutes of exposure to the sun to get a sunburn. Babies can get burned on a cloudy day.

Follow these simple guidelines:

  • Keep your baby out of sunlight between 10 am and 5 pm when the sun is the strongest.
  • Babies under 6 months of age should be kept out of the sun.
  • Protect your baby with hats, sunglasses and loose clothing. It is best if the clothing is made of cotton.
  • Sun rays can bounce back from sand or concrete. They can also come through the clouds.

If the baby gets a sunburn, you can do the following:

  • If it is mild, place a cool water soaked washcloth on the sunburned areas a few times a day. Then apply a moisturizer. Make sure the baby drinks a lot of fluid.
  • If it is severe or you can see blisters, call your doctor.
