Properly Bathing the Baby
Bathing the baby can be done anytime of the day, but most parents like to do it in the evening.
Most babies don't need a bath every day. Usually, 2 or 3 baths a week are sufficient. Sponge baths are
suggested until the baby's umbilical cord has fallen off and the boy's circumcision has healed.
Sponge Bath
- Get all supplies ready that you will need: soft towels, soft washcloth, cotton balls, baby shampoo
and a diaper.
- Pour warm water into the sink.
- Put the baby on a soft towel close to the sink and always hold on to the baby.
- Clean around each eye with cotton balls and warm water. Do not use soap.
- Wash the baby's face with a soft washcloth and warm water only.
- Clean the head and the rest of the baby with
a washcloth and a little shampoo. Then rinse the washcloth
and remove all shampoo with the washcloth.
- Follow the doctor's instructions to clean the umbilical cord.
- Wrap the baby in a towel, dry her and put on a diaper.
Tub Bath
Once the umbilical cord has fallen off, you can bath the baby
in a tub by following this procedure:
- Get these supplies ready: tub, a nonslip mat, soft towels, washcloth and shampoo.
- Put a few inches of warm water into the tub.
- With one hand hold the baby's neck and head. Then carefully put the baby into the tub.
- Follow the same bathing procedure you used for the sponge bath.
- When finished, take the baby out of the tub, lay her on a towel and dry her.
- Put on a diaper and cloth.
