Select the right Breast Pump
A breast pump allows a mother to feed the baby breast milk when breastfeeding is not possible or is inconvenient. It also allows the mother to store the breast milk in bottles for later. Breast milk can safely be stored for seven days or kept in the freezer for up to one year.
The type of pump that is best for you, depends on several factors, such as the age of the child and how often pumping is expected.
There are several types of pumps available:
1. Hospital models, which can be rented from the hospital where you deliver the baby.
These pumps weigh about 5-11 pounds. They work fast and efficient. Monthly rent is about $30-50.
2. Midweight or professional models are a little less efficient than the hospital models. Many models
include dual pumps for emptying both breasts at the same time. These pumps fill up a bottle in minutes.
One of the better known pumps is the Medela pump. Price range is about $175-300.
3. Small electric or battery operated models are useful if you are away for one night
or a few hours. They are lightweight, fit in a purse and are good for occasional use. Price range is about $45-85.
4. Manual small pumps produce suction by squeezing a bulb. There are many styles available.
They are good for occasional use. Price range is about $30-50.
If you expect to use a breast pump regularly, it might be best to consider a midweight model. Consider
dual pumping and pumps that mimic the baby's nursing rhythm.
