Helpful Formula Feeding Tips
In the first few weeks of the baby's life, you don't have to follow a rigid schedule for formula feeding.
After about one month you should be able to establish an approximate pattern for feeding.
For the first 6 months the baby will need an average of 2 to 2.5 ounces of formula for each pound
of her/his weight per day. If the baby weighs 8 pounds, it will need 16-20 ounces per day.
Be sure to prepare the formula accurately as indicated in the instructions. Usually, one
scoop of powder is mixed with 2 ounces of water. Your pediatrician should provide you with suitable
amounts to feed. On the average, these are amounts to follow:
- For a newborn, use 1-2 oz per feeding
- For a baby 1-2 months old, use 3-4 oz per feeding
- For a baby 2-6 months old, use 4-6 oz per feeding
- For a baby 6-12 months old, use up to 8 oz per feeding
Small and more frequent feedings are better than larger amounts per feeding.
Safe formula feeding tips:
- Use the formula before expiration date on the label.
- Do not reuse left over.
- Do not leave it out of the fridge more than
two hours.
- Warm the prepared formula using one of these methods: 1. Let warm tap water run over the bottle for several
minutes. 2. Place the bottle in warm water for several minutes. 3. If you use the microwave to warm
the bottle, heat 6-8 ounces for 30-45 seconds, 4 ounces for 25-30 seconds. Shake the bottle after
heating. Always check the temperature on your wrist.
- Do not keep made up formula longer than 48 hours.
