Healthy Eating for Children
will keep your Children healthy

Healthy eating for children will help children grow up in good condition. Eating well and being physically active is important for the development of children.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has a special pyramid for kids. The food pyramid is one way to show what to eat for a healthy diet.

The USDA dietary guidelines suggest a diet that includes lean meats, fish, beans, eggs and nuts. The diet should emphasize fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low fat items. These recommendations are for children 2 years and older who don't need a diet for special conditions.

The food pyramid for kids suggests that kids should be active every day and eat a variety of foods. Foods should include:
1. Whole wheat bread and oatmeal. Oatmeal is especially important in the morning.
2. Vegetables and fruits. Fruits can be fresh, canned or dried.
3. Low fat or fat free milk for children over two years old.
4. Lean meats, fish, corn and olive oil.

Parents can help by setting an example:
1. Have meals together with children. Studies have shown, when parents and children eat together, children eat better and perform better in school.
2. Get kids involved in preparing meals.
3. Eating well and physical activity is important for the development of children. Experts recommend at least 60 minutes of physical activity daily.

There are excellent books available. Growing Up Healthy provides sensible eating guidelines for children 2-6 years of age. Price is about $22.
