A comfortable
fitting Nursing Bra

For breastfeeding, a nursing bra is an important item for easy and successful feeding. Several types and styles are available. Comfortable breastfeeding will depend on a correct fitting bra.

A bra that does not fit properly will not only be uncomfortable, but might also increase the risk of a milk duct infection.

As a general rule, you will wear the same bra that you normally wear. What increases is the cup, which might increase from a B size to an E size or higher. A properly fitting bra should cover the entire breast. It should have a snug fit, but put no pressure on the breasts. If possible, get it professionally fitted.

A good style should be stretchy and absorbent. Material should be cotton and it should be machine washable. A supply of at least 3 bras is suggested. Price range is about $15-50.

You will also need to get cotton pads that can be tugged inside the bra to absorb any leakage.

Three different types are available:

1. Soft cup models are popular with women. The bras provide support without an underwire. An underwire could clog a milk duct. Many styles and colors are available.

Soft cup bras come with flaps or without flaps. Models with flaps usually open from the top for feeding the baby.

Models without flaps are designed to be lifted above the breast or moved to the side for feeding.

2. Underwire bras offer good support, which is important for women with large breasts. If the underwire puts too much pressure on the breasts, it could clog a milk duct. Bras with underwire should fit properly.

3. Seamless bras are usually made of a cotton/lycra blend, which offers a seamless look. They are available with a soft cup or an underwire. There are several styles available. Be sure they fit properly.
