The Venta Airwasher Ultrasonic Humidifier costs about $180-280. It is a maintenance free digital cool mist model that runs very quiet. It covers about 850 sq. ft. There is no need to clean, but you need to replace the maintenance free box once per season. The replacement filter costs about $30.

Warm mist humidifiers can make a room feel warmer, which might save on energy. They can also dispense medications for inhalation. Warm mist models boil water before the fine mist goes into the air and therefore kill bacteria. They don't need filters. Disadvantages are that they cost more and you need to be watch children, because of the hot water.
